V Westerham Wolves @ King Georges Playing Fields Westerham, Result 1 - 1
The events of midweek set the scene for this league opener against Westerham FC. Striker, Max O’Flynn, collecting another ankle injury mid-week, side lining him for a number of weeks. Our other striker, Che’ Mason, having to go and collect some dirt on a geography field trip, still, we had Josh Norman ready to stand-by. Then we had another injury to OllyD, not sure on the length of that one, and our stalwart in defensive midfield Dan ‘ The Godfather’ David, having to go to a christening in Manchester. So a basic 11 was fielded on the day. It was a warm day too, and the away shirts I think have been made for winter as the players did have a sweat on, couldn’t have been from all the running about, joking.
So Adam Bye (Capt) not sure if he won the toss or Westerham decided to kick downhill first half on the sloping pitch, either way we thought we would have an advantage with only 11 kicking downhill second half.
What a start, 4 minutes in and the determination of Rayan Lasandu down the left resulted in a perfect cross for Matt ‘ I’ve never headed the ball before’ Adams, sticking the ball in the net with a great run into the box and a perfect header , 1-0.
Throughout the first half Broms were all over the Wolves, not sure the Wolves even had an attempt on our goal, Centre Backs Tom GT and Oliver Callow dealing with their rapid striker. We peppered their goal and their keeper had the game of his life with some excellent saves and was it my imagination, the woodwork seem a lot thicker than normal.
Camron Sergeant and Alastair Witter making some great runs down the flanks from their full back positions. Cam was even getting back too.
Our midfield of Adam Bye, Zac Desouza and Dylan Hoad bossed the opposition. Then there was the offensive line, Matt Adam, Josh Norman and Ryan Lasandu. Matt has been on terrific form pre-season scoring a number of goals from outside the box, chances were had but either the keeper managed to get in the way or some were just not hitting the target today. Ryan was making some strong runs and Josh as normal was putting himself about. Josh Norman picked up an injury and had to come off for 20 minutes reducing us to 10 men.
Jota and Werner, however, have nothing on Josh for the sitter that was put over the bar from 2 yards in the second half when he came back on. Lucky Dave 'the camera' Sergeant missed that one.
Conversations on the side-line during the first half murmured the fact that we would rue those missed chances. And we did. 20 minutes to go in the second half poor 1 v1 challenges led to them bullying their way through to score the equaliser. A big effort from the players for the last 20 minutes and a lot more near misses resulted in a 1 -1 draw.
A special mention for the referee on the day – an ardent Westerham fan by the looks of it, should have gone to Specsavers, but to be fair did not affect the result.
